"The
World is Reborn With Your Eyes" – 2007 AFRICA ASIA LITERATURE
FESTIVAL – Jeonju, Korea – Nov. 7-14
From The
Paleonymy Project, a wonderful new blogsite that combines
literature, music, the arts, with engaged scholarship, a notice about
the 2007 AFRICA ASIA LITERATURE
FESTIVAL that will be held at Chonbuk National University
in Jeonju, Korea Nov 7-14.
Jeonju, an ancient historical city and venue of the Jeonju
International Film Festiva, is a South Korean education and
cultural center (and a sister city to Kanazawa, a Japanese education and
cultural center). This festival, which reflects the dynamic and open spirit
of Jeonju, is one of a growing number of glocal (combining the
global with the local) conferences, spearheaded by engaged scholars, that
also includes events for younger students and the community at large.
The titles and topics of the academic programs are compelling:
"Open the Hidden Notebook" and "The World is Reborn With
Your Eye" participants will discuss diaspora (exile, nomadic life,
and human rights) – language (language ecosystems, languages of
refugees, endangered languages) – women (languages of the body,
ruling ideologies and women) – peace (the pain of human beings,
"lonely shoutings to the world," religious fundamentalism, and
political imagination) – and conflicts (writers from troubled regions
in Asia and Africa).
During "Conversation with Writers," Asian and African writers
will address the human dimension of suffering and grief that accompany
conflicts and wars and discuss visions of peace and the future.
