The Heron Dance

BY CLAIR HURFORD

The Sagi Odori (Heron Dance) is one of three devotional dances performed by local school children outside City Hall, as part of the Omukae Chochin (Welcome Lantern) parade during Kyoto’s Gion Matsuri.

Earlier in the day, the small Mikoshi (portable shrine) that lay nearby resting in the late afternoon sun had undergone the Mikoshi purification ritual on Shijo-Ohashi bridge. After the performances finish, it’s welcomed back to Yasaka shrine for the Omukae Chochin ceremony. ~
